재미과학자협회(KSEA) 협회가 주최하는 정기 Forum이 컬럼비아 대학에서 열립니다. 재미과학자협회(http://ny.ksea.org/) 는 잘 아시다시피 Fall Picnic, 수학과학경시대회 및 각종 포럼 등을 주최하며 미국사회에서 한인과학자들을 위해 활발히 활동하는 단체입니다. 이번 정기 Forum에도 어김없이 미국 각 분야에서 활동하고 있는 멤버들 및 선배님들이 모여, 최근 과학분야의 현안에 대해 고민하고 정보를 교류하는 만큼 유익한 시간이 될 것입니다. 또한 미국생활 및 취업 등에 대한 궁금점들을 현장에서 일하시는 분들께 직접 들을 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다.

안녕하세요. 공대학생회 입니다.

개강총회 및 신입생 환영회에 참석해 주신 모든 분들께 감사드리며, 유익한 시간이 되셨기를 바랍니다.

다음 주 토요일(24일)에는 가을 소풍이 있습니다. 가을 소풍은 재미과학자 협회의 후원으로 매년 진행되는 행사이며 교내의 환영행사와 달리 타학교 공대(NYU-Polytech, Stevens Tech, Queens College, NJIT) 학생분들과 졸업생분들, 및 IBM 직원분들께서 오셔서 취업이나 박사지원, 미국 생활등 다양한 정보 공유 및 운동과 소픙, 바베큐를 겸할 수 있는 좋은 자리 입니다.

올해에는 배구, 족구, 그리고 소프트볼 토너먼트에서 좋은 성적을 거둘 수 있도록 선수님들의 참여를 꼭 부탁드립니다. 다양한 경품도 준비될 예정입니다. 답답하고 복잡한 도시를 잠시 떠나 자연을 느낄 수 있는 좋은 기회를 놓치지 마시기 바랍니다.

First, we would like to thank everyone who attended our welcoming party on last Thursday and we hope it was beneficial in many different ways. For those who were not able to make it to the meeting, we wish you can join us on next year’s welcoming party or other upcoming events.

On next Saturday (Sept. 24th), there is going to be a fall picnic! This picnic is an annual event sponsored by Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association very year. Unlike other on-campusevents, we have students and alumni from other engineering schools (such asNYU-Polytech, Stevens Tech, NJIT, and Queens College) and possibly some IBM employees coming to this picnic so we believe this could be a great opportunity for you to get to know each other and gather some information on applying to PhD programs or getting a job in the U.S. There’s also going to be a volleyball tournament, a Jok-gu tournament and a softball tournament so we hope to see asmany players as possible at the event. (AND YES, we do have prizes for the winners for the each tournament!!)

공대 학생회는 새학기를 맞이하여 올해도 어김없이 2011 개강총회 및 신입생 환영회를 개최합니다! 매년 학기 초에 열리는 이 행사는 재학생 과 신입생 모두가 모이는 행사이며, 공대 학생회의 특징이라 할 수 있는 학부생부터 postdoc분들까지 모두 참석하는 자리이기에 그 어떤 모임보다 다양한 분들을 만나 교류를 하고 정보를 공유할 수 있는 자리입니다. 자연대(GSAS) 학생분들도 언제든 환영합니다!

환영사를 해주실Prof. Jim Liew 교수님의 간략한 소개
Jim K. Liew, Ph.D. Columbia

Dr. Liew obtained his Ph.D. in Finance from Columbia Business School.
He enjoys teaching Statistical Arbitrage at Columbia, Baruch, and
Johns Hopkins, and Hedge Fund Strategies at NYU Stern School of
Business, as an Adjunct Professor. Dr. Liew has previously worked at a
large macro quant fund and an ultra-high frequency stat arb fund,
where he built, back-tested, and implemented systematic investment
strategies.

Dr. Liew has extensive business experience within the fund-of-funds
industry as well. Such experiences include: starting a successful
hedge fund-of-funds business that eventually spun out of The Carlyle
Group, managing the World Bank's pension fund direct investments into
hedge funds, and sourcing hedge funds and creating institutional
investment products at a well-known managed account platform.

Dr. Liew has published numerous papers with regards to hedge fund
investing and quantitative investment strategies. Dr. Liew currently
spends his time consulting and advising individuals/institutions on
alternative investment opportunities.

Dear all Columbia Engineering Students and GSAS Students,

I hope the summer went well for everyone! As a new semester is coming up, Columbia KESA would like to invite you to join us for 2011 annual welcoming meeting. Since this event is for both current and new students varying from undergraduate to Post Doctorate students, we believe this is a great opportunities for making connection and sharing some useful information among the Korean community. In addition, some students whom have been working or doing research in Korea for the past summers are also planning to join this meeting so I hope many of you can make it to welcome them.

This year's welcoming meeting will be different compared to that of last year's. Especially, we will have Korean professors from both SEAS and GSAS joining us for this event so I hope everyone can join us to have this awesome opportunity!!

Columbia KESA is looking for new board members!
Columbia KESA first began in 1980 as a small group of Korean students in Columbia SEAS and now has 120 members including affiliated members (Students in GSAS, alumni and post-doctoral researchers). Our main goal is to provide KESA members with opportunities for networking and sharing useful information among the Columbia Korean community. In addition, through various volunteering events, we aim to contribute to Columbia as well as the general New York community. Working as a board member would be a great opportunity to have invaluable experiences and meet many diverse people in Columbia and New York.
